This town of approximately 16,000 people shares a border with the Mexican town of Aqua Prieta. It was originally founded as a smelter town, where the ores of nearby Bisbee were treated. Douglas was incorporated in 1905 and is named for Dr. James Douglas, an early minining pioneer.
