This town of approximately 5,000 people sits in the canyons of the Mule Mountains about six miles from the Mexican border. It was named after Judge DeWitt Bisbee, a large financial backer of the city's early mines. Since its founding in the 1880's, Bisbee has gone through several incarnations. First, Copper was king and the mining industry largely built, and ran the community, providing jobs, stores, a library a hospital, and social activities. In the early 1970s as the minining industries began closing, Bisbee morphed into a free spirited, arts community. Today, Bisbee retains a lot of the artistic, bohemian feel while it honors its mining past and encourages a thriving tourist industry.
