BATTALIONS MOVE FROM NACO

LAST BATTALIONS MOVE FROM NACO FOR SMELTER CITY

Bisbee Daily Review, January 31, 1915, page 5

Transcribed by Jean Walker, June 2024

The last battalions of infantry ordered to Douglas from Naco some days ago, will move to the Smelter City this morning. But four troops of the Tenth Cavalry, with Major Bryan in command will remain in Naco. Today's movement of soldiers will practically clean up the city of soldiers that has been located within a stone's throw of the Warren District for approximately two months.

With the battalion of infantry the remaining detail of artillery will also move. The infantrymen will camp tonight at Forest station and move into their new camp at Douglas tomorrow. The artillery, however, is able to move faster than the infantry and will make camp in Douglas this evening.

Colonel Truitt is in command of the detachment of infantry departing from Naco this morning. He will be accompainied by his staff. With the arrivals in Douglas of these troops the camp in the Smelter City will number well above 5,000 men. It makes a city of itself and is condisered to be a handsome business asset to Douglas.

The army camp in Naco now resembles a deserted village. Signs of camp life are visible on every side, but the remaining four troops of cavalry can hardly fill the void caused by the departure of over 4,000 troops.

The bad weather conditions of the past two days is, undoubtedly, discouraging to the infantrymen who have to plow through mud to Douglas. The soldiers, while in camp at Naco in the month of December, experienced some of the worst weather ever seen in Arizona, however, and are, no doubt, more or less used to it by this time.

Reports from Douglas would indicate that the rain and wind played havoc with the army camp. A large number of tents were blown down early, including one of the bakery tents. Naco is thoroughly soaked and the one prayer of the officers is that the storm will abate before it gets as bad as the December floods.
